School Supply Tax Credit
Claiming Financial Aid on taxes?
Ok, this is a multi-part question.
i received financial aid last semester (in 2009) and therefore my school and books/supplies were paid for. What do I need to bring with me to have my taxes done? How will I validate i’m in school to apply for the Hope credit? Does the school send me something? and do I pay taxes on that money? I know it’s a lot of questions.. just want to do it right. Thanks!
Financial aid is not taxable income.
You can’t claim the Hope Credit unless you paid for something out of pocket. (You get to count tuition, fees, books, supplies, and anything else required for class according to your syllabus.)
Example, If you got:
$1000 pell grant (never taxable)
$1000 state need grant (never taxable)
$1000 student loan (never taxable)
…and your total costs for school were $3500, then you paid $1500 out of pocket (grants only paid for $2000–the loan is out of pocket because you WILL pay it back).
At the end of the year, you’ll get a 1098-t from your school showing how much you paid. Amounts paid by grants are left out.
(If you don’t have any income, though, you won’t be able to take the deduction.)
